Where Have You Been?

Where have I been, you ask?  Well, currently sheltered in place under lockdown like millions of other U.S. residents and other people around the world is the convenient answer.  But that was after returning from an epic vacation that began in early February and ending when we returned home on March 8th; a full month on the road!

The epic adventure took us to Iceland for an 8-day photo tour and after that tour was completed we headed to Portugal for about 4 nights before flying to Morocco for an 18-day tour.  Needless to say, it was great to be home (except for being under lockdown).

Iceland was a photographer’s paradise; beautiful scenery, landscapes and unique black sand beaches and wonderful sunrises and sunsets; we even got a sighting of that elusive Northern Light.  We had some nice clear weather and some cold windy days with some snow and on the last day of the photo tour a huge rare winter storm that shut down all of the roads and businesses in that country.  We returned to Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, the night before the last day our tour was to end to beat the road closures and while cautioned to stay inside the hotel due to flying debris we ventured out to do some errands.  I used part of this time to do a doorscursion in the freezing cold with hurricane gusts and rain to contend with.

I was amazed to find the housing units were very colorful, there were very few high rise buildings due to the typical high winds in that country.  Rather than drop a load of doors in this post I’ll contribute a simple glass door affixed to a corner store because I haven’t been processing my door photos yet.  Note that Coca Cola seems to be very popular in Iceland.

The same door with the dragon surrounds zoomed in.

The photo tour took us to many places and this is a sample of what we saw of the Vestrahorn Volcanic Mountain area.

  1. Woah! It seems you had loads of fun on your month long road trip. Photos are amazing. Would love to see more. I know the lockdown is difficult. This too shall pass! Take care…:)

    1. Thank you so much, Nanchi! I will try to keep up my door postings each week (did the weekly posting for about a year then got distracted and started doing postings when it was convenient and the convenience became an excuse to skip postings. I collected many door photos on this trip so I won’t have to go out to photograph just doors for awhile. Thanks for your interest, if you want to see more of my Iceland photos I am sharing my Flickr album link (my photos are for public viewing). The link is:

  2. Nice to see you back 😀
A nice bright colorful door is a great way to jump back into the door crowd.
Iceland has been a dream destination for me for quite some time so I’m looking forward to seeing more of your shots from there.

    1. Thank you, Norm! I’ve added my Flickr link to replies to a couple of the other members’ comments, please feel free to peruse my Iceland album. Some friends’ comments suggest that they putting Iceland on their bucket list too so I’m tipping the bucket over with my images to have make the decision to when it’s safe to travel again. I need to get Iceland to compensate me for the new tourists I’m sending their way!

  3. That was an epic trip! The colorful door is striking. I suppose since they live in a place that is gray a lot they need those wonderful vivid colors to keep up their spirits.

That landscape!! All those textures, and contours are amazing!

I’m looking forward to seeing more from your Epic Trip, and I’m glad you’re home safely. Be well!

  4. Sorry Gordon, was on a (self imposed) painting mission this week, and the first day am not doing any of that. My goodness Gordon, it seems the traveling bug hit you! Had no idea Iceland was this beautiful, was only at the airport once for a lay-over, but managed to buy one of their woolen coats (many moons ago). Love your last capture:) What comes when the traveling ban is over – any plans? We are on a down-size spree now, because we like to move with a house with a small yard, and closer to the city. Don’t know where yet. Happy you’re back! Stay healthy:)

  5. Thanks, Jesh! Travel plans are in limbo these days. I am good with staying put now especially with COVID-19 around; you should wait until the virus gets contained before moving into more populated areas but you know best. Iceland has beautiful landscapes but many tourists these days, too. Stay healthy and safe, too!
